Portas da Cidade

Located in the heart of Ponta Delgada, the Portas da Cidade is an iconic monument that was originally built in 1783 in front of the old pier of Ponta Delgada. Later, in 1952, they were transferred to their current location due to the works of Avenida Infante D. Henrique.

The Portas da Cidade are the symbol of the primitive earthly defence of the city and are characterized by three beautiful perfect back arcs, which carry in the center the coat of arms of the royal and the city. In 1953 they were classified as Property of Public Interest, raising their interest as a cultural destination.
